In reading up on my religious news, this Wall Street Journal article popped up. It got me thinking… why IS nobody asking about President (edited to add, President) Obama’s Faith Based Initiative now (and about all the ways it is not supporting the idea of separation of church and state)? Why is the Faith Based Initiative only evil and bad when President Bush is behind it? Why is it not just as bad as when President (edited to add, President) Obama is behind it… especially given it is THE SAME EXACT initiative President Bush put in place?
This scant media attention is all the more incredible given that, as Americans United for Separation of Church and State has noted, Mr. Obama has left “the entire architecture of the Bush Faith-Based Initiative intact—every rule, every regulation, every executive order.” More controversially, the office has become a major hub of political outreach.
In my opinion… it is just as much a problem today, as it was in 2007. It is just as important to keep track of as it has ever been. The Republicans are not the only people who seem to have a loose interpretation of separation of church and state. The Democrats have it to. President (edited to add, President) Obama has kept the same exact initiative that Bush had, in place. What do you think about that? He has not added any more transparency to it than Bush did… what do you think about that?
So… do you care less now that the plan is under President (edited to add, President) Obama, or do you care just as much? Why do you think it gets less coverage now, when the issue is still an important one to shed light on?
I don’t think we should just sit around and say nothing just because President (edited to add, President) Obama is now in charge. We should place the same scrutiny on the initiative as we did before.

If it makes you feel better (it won’t, it doesn’t make me feel any better) the same has happened for a number of things. We’re still in Iraq and Afghanistan. There’s still the matter of the people we tortured and nobody is getting punished for it.
Once Obama took office, it served as a sort of muscle relaxant for the more vocal of us. There’s less alarm over the things going on because we think Obama’s on it. And, the fact is, he might be working towards a lot of it, but that doesn’t mean we can take it easy. There are things we’re going to disagree with the president about. There are initiatives that he may propose that we don’t want. As, Obama even said, our government is an open discussion. There’s no magic bullet that’s going to get everyone what they want, but we can sure let our government know what we’d like.

Not being an American, I am not exactly up to date with everything that’s happening. But If I were a democrat, I wouldn’t want to criticize the president even if I disagreed with him. Republicans are doing a great job of slandering him, misquoting him, and lying about him. Throwing more wood to the fire wouldn’t exactly be a good idea at this time.
I doubt it that Obama is directly promoting this or that anyway. He has people appointed to different positions that are making decisions at several levels. Also, in case he is personally involved, I wouldn’t blame him for leaving alone those issues that aren’t too important for the changes he’s trying to implement.

Believe it or not, it is very Canadian to not be too passionate about stuff. We are very quiet around here. We vote and forget about it.
I’m Latina but since I live here I tend to be just like them. I love living in Canada, by the way. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

While I can understand what you mean in your first paragraph, I disagree, completely. As an American, I believe we, the people, are to question our government when we disagree. Whether they are from the same party we are in or not. In fact, we would be well served to question those we voted for and who are from the same party we are in, as we have an even stronger influence (re-election anyone?).
I, personally, am disheartened to see the apathy that so many have in this country. The one thing we have as the people is to stand up and hold our politicians accountable. To not question him because the Republicans are is not a good argument. We all know the Republicans will fight him, just as the Democrats fight the Republicans. But, if we want REAL change, then the democrats MUST question their own and not sit back to see what will happen.
