Be Perfect – Oh Wait… You Can’t Be

Published by leavingreligion at 1:26 am under Sunday Morning Verse

bibleMatthew 5:46-48

46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, [1] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

We must be perfect, but we know this is not attainable.  I’m confused again.

Ha-ha. I had the same conflicting feelings as a Christian. I bet many Christians feel the same way too, but dare not voice it out in church. Or perhaps it only happens to Christians who take the bible seriously.

When I was in the church, this was an incredible source of guilt for me. I felt like I had to be good enough for God, but of course no one can ever be good enough for God….What a horrible, painful cycle!
