Sunday Morning Verse – 7/5/09

bibleThe following verse was pulled from Sanders Web:

John 8:32

“…and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

This verse seems as fitting and applicable to me now,  as it did back when I was a Christian.  Why, you ask?  Because, I have asked questions, studied and come to find answers.  I have come to know the truth… and it has in fact set me free.  Free from the church, the guilt, the hypocrisy.

Freedom is something that we should all hold dear.  I’m thankful today that I live in a country where I am free.  Free to speak my mind, and free to believe (or not believe) whatever I want.  Now, if only I could somehow get the religious right to see it this way.  I think they forget that freedom is not just for them… it is in fact for everyone… yep, even those of us who don’t believe in Jesus.  Imagine that!

Yeah, the Christian right has never seemed willing to understand the simple but true idea that freedom of religion requires freedom from religion.

Jesus, as quoted in the Gospels, said a number of phrases that can be qualified as universal wisdom. Stuff that a wise grandfather may say when he is 90, after having lived a fruitful life.

That verse, “You shall know the truth…” is one of them.

I left Christianity because I learned truths that made me question the whole thing. The truth set me free.
