This summer I will relive some of my summer camp memories. I remember the excitement I had for camp when I was a kid. I loved packing, getting all of my things together, and thinking about which cabin I’d get, which bunk I’d get, and who my cabin mates would be. We’d all meet up early on Sunday morning, get on the bus, and let the chinanigans begin. Parentless, and on our way to one full week of goodness.
I remember getting a new notebook, new pens and pencils and even some stickers for marking up my pages. I was completely prepared to sit and take copious notes. I would be the best note taker anyone had ever seen. I was going to learn about Jesus and God and how to be a better Christian. I had my Bible to reference, my daily devotional to read, and my notebooks to take every note I could about how to be a great Christian. It felt so official, so solid, so unbreakable. Just thinking about it actually brings a smile to my face. I really loved camp. I still have great memories of camp… the friends, the fun, the hanging out. It really was a great escape.
I think the term escape is the right one. Camp creates this ‘utopia’ of learning about Jesus, worshipping every free minute, and having lots of fun people around. I remember feeling invincible… Satan would not bring me down… I had Jesus and my camp notes. I could take on the world, and be good… the perfect Christian. Only problem… as we drove down the mountain, when camp was over, it was as if the closer we got to sea level, the closer I got to losing all of my strength. I could feel the ‘high’ leaving me each turn the bus took. I would still be the good church going girl… but I would never have the high I had at camp. I’d have to wait until the next summer to get it back.
Only problem… the next high was never as good as the very first week I ever had at camp.
