While scanning my daily news, came across this article in the Seattle Times. It’s about a school in Kent where the student body would not allow a group called The Truth Bible Club to become a student body club. Reason, because to vote in the club one must pledge to Jesus Christ.
The Associated Student Body council refused to let the group be chartered as a school club. It cited the group’s name and the fact that students would have to pledge to Jesus Christ to vote in the club, and it argued that allowing the club would bring religion into the school. The club’s would-be founders then sued the Kent School District, claiming discrimination.
This lawsuit from the club leaders started in 2001 and went all the way up to the Supreme Court. Recently, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the school.
The school district says all official student groups must be open to all, without requiring a religious membership pledge or adherence to a Christian code of conduct as the Truth Bible Club was proposing for its voting members.
Of course the students who fought the school are saddened by this decision.
Kudos to the school and student body for standing up and doing what is right. Also to our US Supreme Court for upholding the law. I don’t come to the church and ask them to fund a group they don’t believe in, why should they be funded by the state when there are clear separation of church and state provisions. The church gets tax advantages already, we don’t need to pay them out of public funds, again.

I guess I tend to disagree.
I don’t see the harm of having a voluntary club practice the religion of its choosing. Nobody is forcing the kids to join the club. If the club wants to require kids to make a pledge, so be it. As long as it is not hurting anybody or forced onto anybody, I don’t have a problem with it. I would just as soon see the government get out of the club-activity-monitoring business.
This kind of thing gives atheists a bad name.

I definitely hear what you are saying. I don’t know that I agree that this gives atheists a bad name. I know people who believe in something (even some Christians) who would agree that the state shouldn’t fund religious clubs on public campuses.

Well, I was assuming that the club didn’t really cost any money. Probably just the use of a room, which basically means leaving the lights on for an extra hour. If it were real money going to the religious club, I might have a problem with it (from a legal perspective).
Also, I should have said that taking legal action to shut down a voluntary club is the kind of thing that unfairly and unfortunately gives atheists a bad name. My preferred response would be to start rival club for atheist students. That would really cause a stir.

I would have to be more familiar with the law to have an opinion on this. There is a legal reason why the Supreme Court upheld the ruling, so I think something must be illegal if a school group requires “conversion” to allow voting rights.
In any case, it sets good precedent that religious groups aren’t above the law. I have to wonder what the supporters of this Christian group would say if a Muslim group tried to do the same.

I agree with you, LR. The supreme court made the right decision. Tax money should not be spent on religious groups or atheist groups. Church / State is very important to the welfare of our already crippled nation.

Yes, they were basically asking for the funding (in addition to space) that other clubs get. Also, my understanding is that they didn’t get banned from having their club at all, they were only told they would not be recognized by the student council because they couldn’t give funds to an organization that forced you to be a Christian in order to vote.
